Nosce te Ipsuma! - Know Thyself! - To Know it ALL

What is to “Know Yourself Absolutely!”

- The first and biggest mistake is to think, that to know oneself is a process.
- You know more and more each day about yourself and this means that there is a process and development, there is time in the picture.
- “Know Thyself!” doesn’t include process, development or time in itself.

- If you look for the command more closely, you see two things:
1. Know Thyself happens at once.
2. Know Thyself includes Absolutely everything about yourself, it is All.

Look the word even if your thinking process doesn’t see those facts. Do you see them?

The thinking process of human being is relative and so you cannot see the things that are beyond the relativity.

I give your three samples:

1. They say, that the student in the buddhist monastery has to answer to this kind of question to pass it through: “ What kind of sound comes, when you hit together one hand?”
2. What is beautiful and ugly at the same time?
3. What is fast if you don’t use time at all in answering the question?

All these questions are folly or non sense.

Human mind tries to find for a reasonable question a reasonable answer. If the question is non sense or folly, he or she doesn’t get the answer. How to solve the problem?

My answer for all of those questions could be the same - “Corkscrew”.

My answer belongs to the same system than the question. Both are non sense.

What I want to say with this example is that the Know Thyself- thing is non sense for the thinking process of all the human beings, but does it make it impossible? No!

Same kind of things are God, Soul, Absolute, Infinity, Absolute Truth, Love, Goodness, Harmony, Knowledge, Timelessness, and so on.

For our thoughts these things are non sense and it seems that they belong into the same Order. Are there things beyond our thoughts?

Also the Know Thyself belongs into the same order. It is non sense for our thoughts, but it doesn’t make it impossible to reach.

To the last thing I make an easy question: “Can you live in an another place than in NOW, NOW, NOW, ...?”

Past is those same NOW's same is with the future. And between the past and the future is the NOW.

Do you think it is true? Is it too simple?

Lets make a definition: “ NOW is between the past and the future and it cannot include not a bit from the past and the future.”

Now you can answer a very simple question: “How long time is the NOW?”

1. If you are good in mathematics, you can tackle the question with two cycles that are only touching each other. Other cycle is the past and the other is the future. The touching point is the NOW. Measure the touching point!

2. For us mortals is the following example. Let’s say that the NOW is one second. Clean away the past ant the future from the one second and you get 1/10 second. There are 10/100. Clean the past and the future and you get 1/100 that is 10/1000, and so on.

How long a time is the NOW? Is it simple?

The truth is that you cannot measure the NOW. It is Infinite and still it the only ‘time’ you can live your life. It is not at all time. It is better to call it a place.

The NOW is also the place where the Know Absolutely Thyself happens. To me it is the place where the Wholeness lives.

Nosce te Ipsum! - For me!

Written 09/19/2006
- ‘Know Thyself!’ was not important for me at the beginning of ‘my road’, 1985. I was not at all interested in the subject. The main themes were creativity and what kind of a person is Really Creative. From this findings I developed a ideal person whose body and mind was together.

‘Hale’
At that point in to the picture game a physicist David Bohm, he told in one of his books, that an old word ‘hale’ is the basic word behind the words Whole, Holy and Healthy. This led me to think, if my ideal person is at the same time in the Final Goal of religions, he or she is whole and he or she is healthy.

The miracle healer and the survivor
More thing to think about game, when I met the miracle healing of the cancer patients in the book of Siegel.
Siegel, Bernie, S. M:D: Peace, Love and Healing. New York 1989
In the same book there was also a story about the miracle survivals of the soldiers in the Korean War.
In both cases the main thing was the personality of the people. And it was the same. And it also was the same in the creativity stories of Abraham Maslow.
After the second ‘divine dream’ I realized, that the same personality belonged also for to person who had reached the Final Goal of the religion. Also there game also stories of the consciousness and the area beyond the thinking.

Let’s begin form the beginning
- But let’s us go to fast! My work in the year 1986 was studying the service industry - tourism. The theme was ‘the good service’. I wanted an answer to the question: Why one person can say that ‘the trip was darn good’ or what makes the client satisfied and what role the people who are serving play.
- Before to work started, there had to be one perception, there is no sense in the development or other way to say it, the development doesn’t lead to the goal it promises. Not until much later I could explain what it meant.

The Real Creativity by Maslow
- I met during my work the word creativity. I liked the definition of Abraham Maslow. I think also this word is one of those we use but we don’t have a clue what it really means.
- (I have translated the text once to Finnish and now I translate it back - so not necessarily correctly). ‘He imagined like most of us, that we can define the creative person according his or hers works. Maslow studied first the artists, until he realized that the question in the creativity is not about the work or the deed, but about the PERSONALITY of the person.’

Written in 10/02/2006 - Most of the text is translated from Finnish and the original text has been in English.

The following words are from Maslow:
Maslow, Abraham, Toward a Psychology of Being. Princeton 1962, (This one of the key books on my road.)

In his own words Maslow had to chance fully his thoughts about the creativity and about the creative person. He had to abandon the typical stereotype thinking. where there are words like healthy, gifted and productive and which words are thought to be synonym for the creative.

He noticed, that the product couldn’t be the essential measure of the creativity. The creativity didn’t need giftedness. Also those persons who were not gifted were creative.

He found that the self fulfilling persons had these character markings:

- they were perceptive without any hard work
- they were open, innocent, they were childlike, they were sanely insane
- they lived in the moment, they were less disciplined, they were extrovert
- they were not afraid of themselves, of other people and of the unknown things
- they were healthy both physically and mentally (They were Whole - Bohm)
- they were exited of the indetermination
- they were healthy kind of selfish
- they had great inner coherence (Whole - Bohm)
- they had lots of inner energy for fulfilling them selves, not for the security
- they had the top sensations, joy, happiness, love, laughter, folly, courage, freedom
- they knew themselves and they excepted themselves
- they sow things row, concrete , fresh, originally, abstractly, generalize
- they were anarchistic, chaotic, unclear, safely insane, uncertain, not exact
- they had a lot o dichotomy characteristics and strong swings to opposite directions,
- their self expression was without any restrictions. pp. 137

Maslow said, that these people are living in much more realistic world than those who live with expectations, beliefs and in the stereotypic verbal world. That is the world most of us think it is.

The 40-50 year of persons actions, who were in the study, was in many respect same kind than the creativity of the happy and secure child. They had reached the second naivety, even if they were educated and they had the mind of a grown up person.

Maslow thought that all the human being had from the birth this character, but it usually will be lost or buried or restricted when we develop the grown mind. pp. 138

This was the point that started to change it all in my mind. At this point only the Whole part of the word ‘hale’ from the book of David Bohm was together.

The Exceptional Patient

The exceptional patient or the patient who was cured from the deadly cancer had this kind of personality in the book of Bernie Siegel:

The Finnish name of the book is ‘Love, medicine and wonders: Experiences of the surgeon ... This was the only key book that I was reading during my road, that was in Finnish.

The Simon’s game to these conclusions about the personality of the exceptional patients in the book of Siegel:

The persons who got cured from the cancer were:
- very receptive
- creative
- sometimes very angry
- they had a sound mind
- they were self sufficient
- they respected and loved themselves
- they were very seldom adaptive (?)
- they governed their life
- they were clever
- they had very strong feeling of the reality
- they trusted themselves
- they don’t need other people, but they appreciate the interaction with other people,
- they are interested in their own well being, but are also tolerant and interested in other people,
- they are nonconformist
- their moral is very tolerant
- they are unprejudiced
- they appreciate the difference of the people,
- a problem is only a change in the construction not a point that is leading into the failure.

The Health
According to Siegel “a happy person doesn’t get sick". I think that this sentence can be changed in to a form, that if a person find the exceptional patient from himself, he get cured. This ended the Healthy-section of Bohm. I was astonished about the similarity of the characters - a fully creative and the exceptional patient.

The Exceptional Survivor
The story goes farther in the book of Siegel and the tone comes from Siebert, who studied other kind of survivors.

The psychologist Al Siebert was interested in the personality of the survivors, when he joined the paratroopers in 1953. There were some soldiers, that had survived when nearly all other soldiers of their company was killed in the Korean War.

The veterans were
- hard skinned
- they were tolerant against the mistakes of others
- they joked about the mistakes
- they were observant with the relaxed style
- they had like a personal radar

Their character was very complicated, like a union of many opposites. He named it bifacial.

The veterans were
- serious and playful
- consistent and intuitive
- hard-working and lazy
- aggressive and shy
- introvert and extrovert, and so on.

He said, that they were very paradoxical persons, who didn’t suit very well to any existing psychological category.

Siebert said, that you can learn the characters of the survivors. It is like growing into the adulthood. And there also belongs the staying as a child. It means, that a persons is childlike not childish. pp. 182

- happy child, playful
- become absorbed (time and place disappears )
- the curiosity of an innocent child
- observant
- not judging
- not afraid
- can be laughable, and can also laugh for himself
- is not afraid to make mistakes
- he can tolerate the judgment of other
- he has a very lively imagination
- he has the intelligent play he play
- he has conversations with himself.

Does it seem to complicated? Let’s make it a lot simpler. A persons - who has reached the REAL creativity, who has cured from a deathly disease or survived from a certain death - is from his personality dichotomy (good and bad, and so on). He is also childlike person and he knows himself.

You can see, that the person, they have been describing here is according the medicine crazy and should be locked into the mental hospital.

A short story about the dichotomy. The dichotomy was one of the most important perceptions of mine in 1985 and 1986. I was in the end of 1990’s in a course where they tried to make me to establish a firm for myself. The question was ‘what kind of a person you think you are’. We got a paper, where there was questions. “How do you see yourself, if you keep in your mind the average person?” There were lines that were running from wall to wall. On right end there was for example (your are) very, very hard working and on the left end (your are) very, very lazy. And so on many questions. I made my marks. And then I asked a serious and honest questions from the teacher. “How do I make the marking, when it seems, that I am from the one wall to the other?” The teacher said: “Do what you like, there is no ABSOLUTE right answer.” It was like a lightning would have stricken me. The dichotomy person, the Real creative person, the childlike person, the exceptional patient, the exceptional survivor are the same they go in every respect from on wall to the other and they are so ABSOLUTE persons.

From the picture of Bohm and from the word ‘hale’, there was still missing the ‘Holy’-aspect. Meaning a person that is holy or to me a person, who has reached the Final Goal of the religion. Can you tell me, what is the Final Goal of your religion? In Finland they teach on every level at school the religion. I have been on every level and I couldn’t answer that question - the most important question of them all - “Who do I reach the Final Goal of a religion and what is that Goal?”

At some time in late 80’s there was a Divine teaching dream and also in December 1987 I heard a voice.

1. ‘The Divine teaching dream’: In the dream they told me this is good in my work over and over again in every subject. Then there was a surprise, they asked: “Have I seen, that my work goes together with the teachings of Christ?”

I didn’t know what to do. I had started to study ‘the darn good trip’, the satisfaction of a people. I had stumbled the creativity, the dichotomy, the behavior of the human being and in some degree the knowing oneself question. In a way I perceived, that a religion to be Absolute, from the Divine, the main teaching had to be ‘Know Thyself’. And that was not true to my understanding in christianity. That was my main point, when I started to read the new testament.

So my goal was to deny the Divine origin of the christianity or to find the ‘Know Thyself’ teaching, that I didn’t believe to find there.

I started from Matthew, Mark and Luke and when I was reading the Words I was in the Divine Feeling. The text of John and Paul gave me a feeling of disgust. One of the most frightening thing was, that the Words opened to me very, very differently to that what they had taught me. (Later I knew better, what it meant.)

The most important thing was, that I found out, that main teaching of the Christ was “Know Absolutely Thyself”. That way you reach the GOAL of the LIFE, you find the LIFE in life. The GOAL is not after life it is in life.

Luke 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Luke {17:21}Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Still more stunning is the text from the Gospel of Thomas, that was banned in 300 and 1100 after Kr.

Thomas 3. Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the (Father's) kingdom is within you and it is outside you.

I think that is enough about where the GOAL is. And then few words about the person and one’s characteristics who has reached the GOAL.

Matthew {18:3}And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew {18:4}Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mark 10:15}Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.{10:16}And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Luke {18:17}Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

And again Thomas puts it even better.

Thomas 4. Jesus said, "The person old in days won't hesitate to ask a little child seven days old about the place of life, and that person will live.

For many of the first will be last, and will become a single one."

How do I make it? This person is in the GOAL. He could ask the MAIN question from a seven day old child. He know of cause, that the child cannot give the answer, but the main thing is that he knows that the child of that age is at that time in the GOAL. The old man himself is in the same mental state and in the GOAL. They both are in the childlike state.

Thomas 22. Jesus saw some babies nursing. He said to his disciples, "These nursing babies are like those who enter the (Father's) kingdom."

They said to him, "Then shall we enter the (Father's) kingdom as babies?"

Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter [the kingdom]."

Can it be said more clearly? The adult person doesn’t reach the GOAL as a child, but as an adult that is a childlike person. Then the adult is also in one’s behavior a dichotomy person. He has no me anymore. The me has died and that becomes to be because of the ‘Know Absolutely Yourself’-thing.

Thomas 37. His disciples said, "When will you appear to us, and when will we see you?"

Jesus said, "When you strip without being ashamed, and you take your clothes and put them under your feet like little children and trample then, then [you] will see the son of the living one and you will not be afraid."

The question is about the GOAL and how does the person who has reached it could behave. If the later seem difficult to understand, put a small child to the picture and imagine him or her to do the trick .

In the earlier section I was talking about the Real Creativity and the life of an survivor. A normal person with the normal thinking and values wants to be good - hard working, intelligent, fast, beautiful, and so on, at the same time he wants be as far as possible from the opposite. The biggest dichotomy there is is between you and me. And if there is me-man, you-woman, you get even bigger dichotomy. When ‘the Know Yourself’ happen, the me and the you come together. There is no me and you. The person is together with it ALL.

Still one story from the New Testament and from the teachings of Christ. Is ‘the KNOW THYSELF’ the key teaching?

The answer is YES! And Jesus says somewhere, that is not come to cancel the law meaning the ten commands, but he has come to add something - the LOVE. So the answer is in the command of LOVE. I take the example from the Luke, because he doesn’t make the difference between the first and the second.

Luke {10:25}And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
{10:26}He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
{10:27}And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
{10:28}And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

So there it is, the guide to the GOAL! So you see it? Let’s take the last part or would it be better to say the end of the command: ..and (love) thy neighbour as thyself.

This is all you need from the Bible!

- Which one comes first thy neighbor or you/ thyself?
- Can you love thyself, without knowing who you are?
- Is then the knowing before loving?

To us ordinary people it was not seen fit to tell, that the Greek word behind the word love was AGABE. That is the way God LOVES. So would it be proper to say that it means to LOVE ABSOLUTELY to be ABSOLUTELY TOLLERANT.

So it seems reasonable to chance the last part into this form: “Love absolutely thy neighbor as you absolutely love thyself”.

May be that you see now the importance of knowing thyself, but what kind of knowing is enough? Is enough to know a little or some relative portion of yourself? Does it seem logical, that if you have to LOVE ABSOLUTELY yourself, you also have to KNOW ABSOLUTELY yourself?

So the command will change some more: “When you Know Absolutely yourself, you Love automatically Absolutely yourself and you Love automatically Absolutely thy neighbor and you Love automatically Absolutely ALL the thing that surround you, meaning the WHOLENESS, the GOD!”

Our religion is so Absolute, but remember, that also in the Jewish religion and in the Islam there is the same command “Know Thyself!” So that is the key to the GOAL and it happens during the life in life.

Few words about the word ‘repentance’. This is what a Finnish author Mika Waltari has said:

"I felt myself as free, when I red a little while ago about the word ‘repentance’, which is according to my understanding a very important word in the New Testament. The word ‘repentance’ and who it has been understood has been very disagreeable to me, as I know a little bit about myself. I have never reached the repentance in my life. Then I was reading that the Greek word behind the word repentance really means ‘think with the new way’ or ‘turn your direction’ or ‘renew’. I felt free at last.

Waltari, Mika, Ihmisen ääniä. Porvoo 1978, s. 196 -197

Because there is no other way to think, there is either the thinking process or the non thinking process, then you reach to the Goal by meditation or by quieten your thoughts and that means that you see everything with new eyes.

That is ALL!
